West Midlands Safari Park

Family outings at safari parks

The West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley, England, is one of the most famous safari and leisure parks in the UK and a popular attraction for families, animal lovers, and adventure seekers. Opened in the spring of 1973, the park is located in the picturesque county of Worcestershire and spans an area of approximately 80 hectares. The park combines an impressive variety of exotic animals with a small amusement park, offering a unique experience that combines nature, education, and entertainment. Since its founding by Jimmy Chipperfield, a former circus entrepreneur, the West Midlands Safari Park has evolved into a leading center for animal conservation and wildlife preservation.

Wildlife observation in the UK

The heart of the park is the four-mile safari drive-through, which allows visitors to drive through various habitats in their own vehicles. This drive enables visitors to observe some of the most fascinating and beautiful animals in the world up close, including giraffes, rhinos, elephants, lions, and tigers. The park is particularly proud to house the largest group of white lions, cheetahs, hippos, and meerkats in the UK. It was also the first zoo in the UK to present all five of the African "Big Five" - lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and buffalo. The animals move largely freely in spacious enclosures that mimic their natural habitats, providing visitors with an authentic safari experience.

Adventure at West Midlands Park

In addition to the drive-through, the West Midlands Safari Park offers a variety of walking experiences. The "Discovery Trail" is a walk that includes mainly indoor exhibits, making it attractive even in bad weather. Here, visitors can explore the reptile house, a twilight cave with bats, an insect exhibition, and an aquarium. The "Lemur Woods" is a walk-through area where visitors can get up close to playful lemurs, and the "African Village" showcases meerkats among other animals. Regular animal encounters, where visitors can meet small exotic animals like ferrets or chinchillas under supervision, complement the offerings. Daily shows, such as the sea lion show where the animals demonstrate their impressive skills, also provide additional entertainment.

Animal experiences for children and adults

Another highlight is the themed attractions that enrich the park beyond just animal observation. The "Land of the Living Dinosaurs" is the UK's largest animatronic dinosaur exhibition, transporting visitors into the world of prehistoric times with lifelike, moving models of dinosaurs from Tyrannosaurus Rex to Velociraptor. This is complemented by the "Ice Age" exhibition, showcasing Ice Age animals such as mammoths and sabertooth cats. For families with younger children, there is "Boj's Giggly Park," an interactive play area with slides and puzzles specifically designed for the little ones.

Conservation and education at safari parks

The amusement park area offers a selection of rides to complement the experience. Attractions include three roller coasters, a log flume, a pirate ship, and smaller carousels suitable for both children and older visitors. Although this area is more compact than in large theme parks, it adds an additional dimension to the visit and provides variety after the safari and animal encounters.

The West Midlands Safari Park places great importance on conservation and research. It is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, and participates in international breeding programs for endangered species. A milestone was the birth of the first male African elephant in the UK through artificial insemination in 2014. The park also collaborates with international partners, such as the Ongava Research Centre in Namibia, where research on lions and rhinos is conducted. Parts of the safari grounds, such as the enclosures for cheetahs and African wild dogs, are located in a protected heathland area that the park actively restores.

For those looking to extend their experience, the park offers luxurious safari lodges, a unique accommodation option overlooking animals such as elephants, cheetahs, or giraffes. These accommodations are particularly popular among visitors seeking a close connection to the animal world. The park is surrounded by hilly landscape that invites relaxation, and offers numerous picnic areas and dining options ranging from snacks to full meals.

Just returned from a nights stay in Red Panda Lodge and Giraffe Lodge. Utterly fabulous. Paid for the jeep safari drive as little one is autistic and didn't know how he would be stuck in traffic, so needed a get out plan in case. It was amazing. So informative and got so close to the animals. The park was great. Rides were fine for 9 and 11 year old but they are probably at the older end. The lodges are brilliant and being able to be in the park when it's closed and quiet was fabulous. I can imagine as the nights get lighter, it's even better. Loved it.

Had a nightmare booking, but was sorted straight away, we went into the safari at 12, we heard at ticket office others had booked a different time but told they could go o anyway we was in the car with windows shut with the kids for nearly 3 1/2 hours , just sitting , other cars were driving over the grass it was horrendous , there was far to many cars , we have been before and never experienced anything like , The children missed out on other attractions as they were closing , we all even had to eat lunch in the car, Change a nappy in the car , Need to let less people in at onc , have more control, Has put me off future visits

We explored the midlands safari park and it was a great experience. A fun day out with family with multiple areas. They have food, rides and also face painting. You can buy the tickets in advance and also get a band for the rides in advance at cheaper prices. Would definitely recommend pre booking the tickets.

Used the Safari lodges and stayed in the red panda lodge for one night. An amazing experience. Great lodge, well presented and furnished. Good ordered in advance and prepared by us in a microwave was lovely, and the menu selection was impressive. The acres and view to the panda’s, and the rest of the park was an unexpected bonus. Moving around the park after closing time was a unique experience. Talking to the zoo keepers who looked after the panda’s as really interesting and informative. Overall a great experience.

My first visit to the zoo. The safari drive was fantastic, being able to be so close to the animals was amazing. The walk through section is great for families, but being there to take photos. I found some of the animals hard to photograph through the glass. But I would 100% recommend for a family day out. Plenty to do and see.

Decent day out. Crazy ques and people as normal not understanding the 2 lanes, the right lane is a over take lane and no stopping, so the park flows not today. Also, no controls or checks the disabled parking 9/10 cars had no badge as normal. Other than that, a great day out.

Highly recommend a visit here . The drive through the park is wonderful ( we used the guided jeep tour , very informative) , you get up close to most of the animals ( obviously not the lions and tigers) . The rest of the park too is wonderful, the penguins and especially enjoyed the lemur woods where you are surrounded by the lemurs . The theme park is small but good fun , rides for everyone , adults and children . The food on site was tasty and reasonably priced . Plenty of toilets and all clean . Staff were all friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again . We were all adults but the facilities for children looked wonderful.
